About the Instructor
Photographer/Author Matthew Jordan Smith has worked with some of the most prominent people in
entertainment today, including Halle Berry, Britney Spears, Oprah Winfrey, and Angela Bassett. His clients include Revlon, Lifetime, Showtime and HBO.
In the Fall of 2001, Matthew's gift
for relating to his subjects on a personal level led to the creation of his first book, Sepia Dreams, A Celebration of African-American Achievement Through Words and Images, published by St. Martin's
Press. The book encompasses a collection of photographs and interviews with fifty African-American celebrities, all of whom spoke candidly with Matthew about the motivations and qualities that enabled
them to find and embrace success.
Matthew and Sepia Dreams were the subject of an E! Entertainment interview in which celebrities including Samuel L. Jackson, Halle Berry, and Taye Diggs spoke about their involvement with him in making Sepia Dreams. In August of 2002, Delta
Airlines featured the E! interview as part of their in-flight entertainment. In June of 2003, Matthew was selected as a Kodak Professional Icon and will have his work and books featured in photography magazines around the world along with participating in select Kodak Professional events.
Matthew's love of photography stretches far beyond his commissioned work and has given birth to several personal projects, one of which is his second book project, currently titled Family
Secrets.
A native of New York City, Matthew has taught at the prestigious School of Visual Arts in Manhattan, and is an active volunteer with Parson's School of Design and Pratt Institute.
Matthew is involved with a local mentoring group and volunteers his time to speak for ORMA (Operation Role Models Of America), enlightening students on living their dreams and the art of photography. He
resides in Manhattan.
